If your jaw aches, clicks, or feels tight, or you wake up with headaches, you may be dealing with a TMJ disorder. The good news is that many TMJ symptoms can be managed with conservative, non-surgical care.
At The Dentist, we evaluate your jaw, bite, and teeth to find out what’s driving your discomfort. Treatment options include custom night guards and Botox® for TMJ, provided by Dr. Raj Pradhan, DDS.
Our goal is simple: less pain, less tension, and a jaw that works the way it should.
What Is the TMJ, and What Is a TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. It works like a sliding hinge, letting you talk, chew, and yawn.
A TMJ disorder, often called TMD, is a problem with the jaw joint or the muscles that control it. Many people simply say “TMJ” when they mean the disorder. TMJ disorders are often temporary, and for many people, symptoms improve with conservative care.
What Causes TMJ Pain?
The exact cause isn’t always clear, and it’s often more than one thing. Common contributing factors include:
- Clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism), especially at night or during stress
- A bite that doesn’t line up properly
- Arthritis in the jaw joint
- A past injury to the jaw
- Muscle tension in the jaw, face, and neck
Common Signs of a TMJ Disorder
- Pain, tenderness, or aching in the jaw, face, or around the ears
- Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when you open or close your mouth
- Headaches, especially in the temples or when you wake up
- Pain or difficulty when chewing
- A jaw that feels tight, tired, or stuck
- Worn, chipped, or flattened teeth from grinding
In more severe cases, the jaw can temporarily lock open or closed. If your jaw is locked, call or text our office right away.
How We Evaluate TMJ Symptoms
Your visit starts with a conversation about your symptoms, when they happen, and what makes them better or worse.
Our doctors then examine your jaw joints, the muscles of your face and jaw, your bite, and your teeth for signs of clenching or grinding. From there, we’ll recommend a treatment plan that fits your symptoms and your goals.
TMJ Treatment Options at The Dentist
Botox® for TMJ
Botox® for TMJ relaxes the overworked jaw muscles that contribute to clenching, tension, and pain. Many patients find it helps relieve jaw discomfort and TMJ-related headaches.
At our office, Botox® for TMJ is provided by Dr. Raj, who is certified to provide Botox® injections. He’ll review your symptoms and health history to decide whether it’s a good fit for you.
A few things to know:
- Treatment involves a series of small injections into specific jaw muscles, usually during a short visit.
- Results are temporary and typically last a few months, so many patients schedule follow-up treatments.
- Botox® for TMJ is an off-label use, which means it’s used for TMJ based on clinical experience rather than an FDA-approved indication. Dr. Raj will talk through the benefits and considerations with you.
- Results vary, and Botox® may work best alongside other treatments, such as a night guard.
Custom Night Guards
A night guard is a custom-fitted appliance worn over your teeth while you sleep. It cushions your teeth from grinding and can reduce strain on your jaw muscles and joints.
Because it’s made from impressions of your teeth, a custom guard fits more comfortably and securely than a store-bought option. Learn more about our custom mouthguards and night guards.
Oral Splints
An oral splint is similar to a night guard, but it may be worn during the day as well. A splint can help hold your jaw in a more comfortable position and take pressure off the joint and muscles. Our doctors will let you know whether a splint makes sense for your case.
Bite-Related Care
If worn or misaligned teeth are contributing to your symptoms, addressing your bite may help. Depending on your needs, options can include restoring worn teeth or orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign.
At-Home Care
Simple habits can make a real difference, especially alongside professional treatment:
- Eat softer foods and take smaller bites during flare-ups
- Avoid chewing gum and hard or chewy foods
- Apply moist heat or a cold pack to sore muscles
- Notice and relax clenching during the day (lips together, teeth apart)
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
If your symptoms need care beyond what we provide, we’ll help you find the right next step.
